We Are Here

Bourke can be reached by the Mitchell Highway, with additional sealed roads from town to the north (Cunnamulla), east (towards Brewarrina, Moree and Goondiwindi) and south (Cobar).

The town is also served by Bourke Airport(private aircraft only at present) and has Countrylink bus service to other regional centres, like Dubbo.

It was also formerly the largest inland port in the world for exporting wool on the Darling River. The countryside around Bourke is used mainly for sheep farming with some irrigated fruit and cotton crops near the river.

Bourke is the original terminus of the Main Western railway line. The railway extension from Byrock opened on 3/9/1885, the station building in now used as an information office. Passenger services on the line were cancelled in September 1975 with the line closing from Nyngan to Bourke in May 1989, after flooding caused major track damage.

The Tourist Information Centre is located on the Mitchell Highway at The Back 'O Bourke Exhibition Centre.
